A blank page is a surprisingly hard prompt. Give a writer a letter, a number, and one strange constraint, and they are usually producing sentences within a minute. The same trick works for meetings: a small random element lets people speak without having to volunteer. Here are six formats that have held up.
1. The letter-constrained quick-write
Spin the Random Letter Generator and write for five minutes without using any word that starts with that letter, or, as an easier version, using as many words as you can that start with it. The first version is hard enough that nobody has time to worry about quality, which is the point.
2. Number-picked page and line prompts
Choose a book from the shelf, then use the Random Number Generator to pick a page and a line. Whatever sentence sits there becomes your first line, or your last. It sounds gimmicky until you see how different the starting points are from what you would have chosen.
3. Three-wheel story seeds
Build three small wheels in the Custom Wheel Builder: a character (a retired lighthouse keeper, a nervous courier), a setting (a night ferry, a closed mall), and a complication (a wrong address, a borrowed key). Spin each once. The combinations are rarely what you would plan, which forces invention rather than repetition.
4. Two truths and a spin, for new teams
Everyone writes one true thing about themselves. Put the names on a Decision Wheel, spin to choose who shares, and use elimination mode so each person goes once. Nobody has to volunteer, and nobody is chosen because they are the easiest to call on.
5. Category icebreakers that scale down the pressure
Put light topics on a wheel: a favorite meal growing up, the first thing you bought with your own money, a skill you wish you had. The person who is selected answers the topic that comes up. Avoid topics that require disclosing anything personal, and let people pass once.
6. Random partner pairs for workshops
For breakout discussions, paste the attendee list into the Random Team Generator and split into pairs or trios. Random groups mix departments and seniority more reliably than self-selection, which is a point we make in our guide to splitting groups fairly.
Making it work
Set a time limit before you spin, keep prompts short enough to remember, and be honest that the wheel is a tool for starting, not a judge of quality. For classroom versions of these, see the Classroom Spinner and our guide on using a picker wheel in class.
